The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that today, one in six men will encounter prostate cancer in their lifetime.  It’s the combining factors like processed foods and pollutants that are helping these number rise, making prostate cancer more common.  Symptoms can be as mild as trouble urinating and as severe as death from metastasized cancer.  While these facts may sound discouraging, there are several methods of prevention one can take.  If we combine alternative medicine with nutrition and a low-stress lifestyle, we can drastically lower the chances of prostate cancer.

What is a prostate?

prostategland2

The prostate is an exocrine gland in the male reproductive system.  It’s located under the bladder and in front of the rectum.  The urethra goes through the prostate, secreting urine and semen.  The prostate muscles fibers contract and release, controlling urine flow.  The prostate also adds a white milky substance to semen when they are secreted from the testis.  This fluid protects and nourishes the sperm during “transport”.

When should one get checked for prostate cancer?

85

The ACS recommends that men start getting regularly checked for prostate cancer after the age of 50…  even earlier if you’re at a higher risk.  Higher risks would include African Americans, those with a family predisposition, the obese, and the elderly.  Initial tests for prostate cancer include a prostate-specific antigen test (PSA) and/or a digital rectal exam (DRE), either being ran with your doctor annually.

Prostate cancer begins with prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), which cause tiny alterations in the shape and size of prostate gland cells.  Adenocarcinoma is when prostate cancer starts in these gland cells.

Several symptoms could hint that prostate issues are at hand.  There could be trouble urinating or total urinary incontinence.   There may be a decrease in the force of urine stream.  There can also be erectile dysfunction and blood present in the semen.  Growth in prostate cancer also causes pelvic discomfort and bone pain.

So why are the rates for prostate cancer in the US so high?  Compared to Asian countries where the rates are drastically lower, it could be due to a combination of factors.  The most significant factor is likely attributed to diet.  One example is the consumption of dairy and beef products.

What foods should one avoid to promote prostate health?

After a certain age, our bodies produce an antibody against milk.  70% of people stop producing lactase (the enzyme that digests milk sugar) once weaned.  Non-organic milk is high in IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor) since milk is produced during the pregnancy of the cows.  Milk-film-made-in-ChelseaWhen IGF blood levels increase by 8%, your risk of prostate cancer increases seven times!  These cows are also pumped with BGH (bovine growth hormone) to yield more product.  These hormone-disrupting chemicals stimulate the prostate (and breast cells) to grow by hormonal messages.  When we have high levels of estrogen (making things grow) and not enough progesterone (keeps cells healthy) to balance, mutating growth can occur.  Too much stress raises cortisol, which also competes with progesterone.  The best way to avoid the harmful effects of GMO beef and dairy products, buy organic!  Then you have the relief of knowing your product is herbicide and pesticide-free, plus there is no practice or use of BGH.

Another dietary modification one can make towards a cancer and disease-free lifestyle is changing to an alkaline diet.  Dr. Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel prize in 1931 for discovering the benefits of eating alkalinity-promoting foods.  Basically, cancer and disease thrive in an acidic environment.  Cancer thrives by fermenting sugar, increasing acidity and decreasing oxygen for our healthy cells.  What happens when our healthy cells don’t have enough oxygen to live? They grow weak, defenseless, and can die, letting disease and cancer take over.  So if the body were to become more alkaline, healthy cells will have more oxygen to thrive while cancer cells become dormant and die.  Foods that cause acidity in the body can include white flour and sugar, coffee and sodas, meat, eggs, and dairy.  But all fresh vegetables are know to promote alkalinity!  Also remember that sugar facilitates cancer growth.

Fried, browned, and burnt foods should also be avoided, since they are a source of free greasy-fast-foodradicals (leads to damage of healthy cells).  High antioxidant foods help prevent this damage from happening.  There are a wide range of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and phytonutrients that provide a strong cancer defense.  The trick is to consume these nutrients from whole foods verses just supplements, since these nutrients combined provide a synergistic effect.  Certain nutrients can whisk carcinogens out of cells, or prevent hormones from latching onto cells.  They cut off the blood supply to tumors, or interfere with the creation of carcinogens.

What cancer-fighting nutrients promote prostate health?

citrus-fruit-in-bowl

Starting with vitamins, most of us are aware that vitamin C will boost our immune system, creating a stronger defense against disease.  Vitamin C is water soluble, protecting our fluids.  When combined with vitamin E, a fat soluble vitamin, the tissues are protected as well!  Vitamin E is also a strong antioxidant, fighting free radicals that cause harm to the body.

Studies show that about 50% of all men with prostate cancer are deficient in zinc.  Another important mineral to be mindful of is selenium, which can be found in seafood and sesame seeds.  Selenium in a vital piece of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase that fights prostate cancer.  The recommended dose to show these benefits is 200-300mcg/day.

flaxseedAmino acids like glycine provide antioxidants that fight cancer.  Glycine is in high protein foods like fish, meat, and beans.  The amino acids in flax seeds are strongly beneficial against prostate cancer as well!  The flax lignans bind to male hormone receptors and promote the elimination of testosterone.  This slows the rate of cancer cell growth and increases the death rate of cancer cells after about 34 days.  You can get the recommended 30g a day by just grinding up (fresh) and consuming 2tbsp of flax seeds a day, which can lower serum testosterone by 15%.

Of all the nutrients that help build up the body’s defense against disease, phytonutrients are the body’s most crucial allies.  They not only fight against cancer but act as antioxidants.  The immune system is enhanced, the body detoxifies, hormones are balanced, and overall youth is promoted.  These phytonutrients come by the thousands, synergistically combined in whole (and primarily raw) foods.  They can hinder cancer at all different stages.  One of the first phytonutrients I will introduce to you is piperine (found in black pepper, chiles, paprika, and cayenne) which helps the body absorb more nutrients.  So spice it up to open the door for these amazing cancer-fighting nutrients:

Flavonoids – prevent cancer-causing hormones from latching onto cells (found in citrus, berries)
Pulses in bowls colourful

Isoflavones – cuts off blood flow to tumors (legumes), only absorbable when fermented (tempeh, miso)

Saponins – prevent cancer cells from multiplying (kidney and garbanzo beans, lentils)

Limonene – stops progression of cancer, destroys and dismantles cancer, fights tumors, most effective at initiation stage, decreases cell to cell miscommunication (citrus fruits, spices, essential oils especially grapefruit, tangerine, and orange)

Astaxanthin – most powerful antioxidant, lowers cancer risk (algae, salmon, trout, shrimp, krill oil, plankton)

Epicatechin and polyphenols– decreases cancer risk (dark chocolate, red wine, tea, soy beans, apples)

shutterstock-tomatoes.jpg

Lycopene – slows growth of prostate (and breast) cancer, stunts growth of renal cell carcinoma, cancer preventative, more potent when cooked (tomatoes, watermelon, papaya, asparagus, red cabbage, grapefruit, mango, carrots, guava)apples-prostate-cancer-curing-foods

Onion-and-garlic-varietiesQuercetin – prevents/stops growth of prostate cancer cells by blocking the androgen activity in androgen-responsive human prostate cells (onion, garlic, apple skins, dark berries)

Besides eating the foods containing these cancer-fighting phytonutrients, I also recommend eating whole foods like dark green leafy and cruciferous vegetables, artichoke hearts, beets, brown rice, oranges, lemons, limes, and dandelion.

What supplements also fight prostate cancer?

Pectin is another strong cancer-fighter, which you can obtain in modified citrus pectin (MCP).  It’s a supplement you can take that’s obtained from the peel and pulp of citrus fruits.  They are short, non-branched, galactose-rich carbohydrate chains.  Galectins are proteins on the surface of cancer cells that attach to glucose (remembering sugar facilitates cancer growth).  Therefore, more galectins make it easier for cancer cells to clump and metastasize.  MCP in going to bond to these harmful galactins, preventing cancer from clumping and spreading.  More specifically, it prevents metastasis of breast, prostate, lung cancer, and melanoma.  For prostate cancer, it can helps decrease PSA levels. The recommended dose for this benefit is 6-30g/day.

Betasitosterol is a phytonutrient one can consume from plant fats such as avocados, soybeans, peanuts, pecans, saw palmetto, and pumpkin seeds.  It can also be taken as a supplement to encourage prostate health.  Betasitosterol can be used to treat prostate disorders like an enlarged prostate, or can alleviate some symptoms of prostate cancer.  How does it do this? The main causes of a prostate disorder are again and hormones.  When testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), prostate cells increase since division is stimulated.  Therefore, and increase in DHT leads to an enlarged prostate gland.  Betasitosterol inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT.  This plant fat also helps lower the bad LDL cholesterol.

What are some alternative medicine options to help?

Besides fueling the body with everything we’ve discussed, it’s always important to remember to relax.  Stress depletes our energy on every level and weakens our immune system.  Healthy outlets for stress such as art/music therapy, exercise, dance, yoga or meditation help create balance on all planes.  Ideally if we were to create a lifestyle that encouraged our health and well-being, we’d rid ourselves of the unnecessary stresses and toxic people…  focusing our energy and intention on being well and happy.

Terrariums: Making a Happy Space

detox, diy, healthyliving, healthymind, ideas, meditation, mind, onabudget, terrariums, yoga

Of course, this is about more than terrariums…

Ever look for a fresh start, or crave some boost of change in your lifestyle?  I always found myself wanting to improve a handful of aspects in my life, ways to be healthier and an effectively functional human being.  Yet often, these thoughts are buried by life’s daily distractions long enough to lose focus.

Trust me when I say it’s worth the time to STOP. Take a look around and ask yourself: What would I like less of, & What would I like more of.  Once you distinguish the things you love and things you don’t need, start cleaning! This applies to both your living space and the way you live.

Today and for days to come, I am focusing on my living space.  Home should be a sanctuary, a place where you can fully unwind in a space of love.  What might be cluttering (space and thought) that doesn’t need to be there? Does something really resonate with you?  If it does, keep it!wp-1462049412980.jpg

Plants and animals make my heart smile.  Probably the reason I have a zoo of fur babies.  As a reward of decluttering, I treated my happiness with crafts of succulent plants and fresh herbs.

wp-1462049420818.jpg

I use the herbs for cooking, the plants are great for circulating oxygen in my home, and there’s life and smiles illuminating my space! My animals say hello to the plants every morning.  The kitties even have their own patch of wheatgrass growing in their kitty condo!  Thrilled to say this project has been a success…

Building:

  1. After you clean whatever vase you are using to build your terrarium, fill the bottom with a layer of sand.
  2. You can put a layer of moss between your sand and soil to prevent them from mixing together over time.
  3. Add your cactus soil, enough to plant whatever succulents/cactuses you picked.

✩ tip: if you already own a thriving succulent, you can trim off a branch and replant it!

4.  Carefully plant your succulents, dampening the soil to set them in place.

5.  You can now add moss, stones, or other decoration ☺︎

Rebooting those eating habits – Eating Consciously

cleanse, detox, healthyliving, healthymind, meditation

Yet, another cleanse!

I’ve been dedicated to cleansing every couple months.  Not only do I get a refreshing dose of super foods, but I commit to practicing clean eating and living habits for a period of time.  What better way to develop healthy habits than to consistently practice them!

Over the past couple of years, I’ve tried a number of different cleanses and detoxes — everything from drinking tea daily to juicing to a Paleo diet.  Some practices have left me feeling more rejuvenated than others, and some habits I now practice daily!  It’s the slightest tweak in decision-making that makes the world of difference.

I also find it’s easier to stick to the regimen if you promote yourself!  This could mean getting a friend to join you, or maybe just posting your progress.  The key is to be held accountable, however if you “cheat” on a cleanse, you’re only short-handing yourself ;]

These are the habits I will mindfully practice for the next 7 days…

1. Jillian Michael’s Tea Cleanse

8f009edc-3006-470a-9cd6-eb6e8c7d5b56_zpstltcqucb

Are you a tea drinker?  Then you’re especially going to like this.  This is a simple one to follow, especially when you don’t have to modify what you eat!  Just drinking 60oz. of this tea (2 Large mason jars) a day helps shed 5lbs. in a week…

>> 1 Organic Dandelion Root tea bag

>> 2 Tbsp. lemon juice

>> 2 Tbsp. 100% pure cranberry juice (no sugar)

Dandelion Root : helps boost metabolism, serves as a diuretic, and aids digestion.  It’s also good for your liver and gallbladder.

– Lemon : rich source of vitamin C which promotes a healthy immune system.  It serves as a detox agent, aiding the kidneys, restoring the body’s natural pH balance, and giving a natural energy boost.

– Cranberry : rich in antioxidants. Serves as a diuretic, cleansing your urinary tract and helps in aiding UTI’s.  Also good for your oral health.

2. Superfood / Raw / Paleo Diet

 439277ef-d296-473e-85cf-48ee2648d2f7_zps2nh4wjrg

This part is always bittersweet!  It takes preparation and planning ahead for this one.  Everything I eat or drink is a consumption that serves a nutritional purpose.  Most of my picks are raw foods, avoiding additives like sugar, chemicals, butter, starch, etc.  I usually shop the day of or before I start this cleanse so I have a full kitchen to work with.  Consider this the fun part where you get to experiment and try all those new recipes you’ve been posting on Pinterest!  I’ve found lots of yummy choices from The Nutrition Twins, and have a small collection of clean eating recipe books I can finally give attention to.  I have a few drink and food recipes on  My Pinterest for you as well!

Here are a few items on my shopping list:

>> lean chicken breast

>> 100% orange juice, almond milk, coconut water, 100% cranberry juice

>> sweet potato, onions, bell peppers, kale, garlic, carrots, strawberries, bananas, lemons, green apples, romaine lettuce, grapes, spinach, broccoli

>> whole grain tortillas, quinoa

>> dark chocolate raisins, almond butter, almonds

>> chic peas, mixed beans, corn kernels

Find foods that are convenient so you can take it with you or prepare fast — no excuses when you’re at work or going out.  My boyfriend wanted to go on a movie date, so I prepared some healthy munchies to take with me :]

3. Mindfulness

0635e2bf-e3ff-4fdf-b2ad-79ee855b82a3_zpsasypw3pp

This can mean whatever you want it to mean.  For me, I see this as a mental cleanse.  I dedicate this week to myself, to really love myself and spend time doing the things I love but often lose focus of.  I stick to my daily yoga, I’ll meet up with friends for a hike or dominate a tennis match.  I’ll finally make time for that book I’ve been wanting to read, or to learn that song on guitar that’s been stuck in my head.  I meditate every day (even if just for a few minutes) to focus on my breath and the present moment.  You are cleansing your body because you want to be healthy, inside and out, mentally and physically.  You’re being good to yourself, because WHY SHOULDN’T YOU BE? When you consume, always consider how it benefits you, whether it’s food or life.  Take on each day like it’s going to be awesome, because you want to have an awesome day!

Simple 21 day Detox!

body, cleaneating, cleanse, costfriendly, detox, diy, healthy, healthyeating, healthyliving, ideas, mind, onabudget, planningahead

Yet, another detox I stumbled across on Pinterest! I finally have an excuse to but a new tea kettle ;] When people hear the word “detox”, they think of fasting, maybe sticking to only raw foods, or cutting out certain food groups completely for a temporary time.  When I “detox” or cleanse, I am dedicating a certain period of time to practicing clean eating habits that I hope to adopt into my lifestyle completely!  I’ve tried everything from a Paleo diet to juicing, from a raw food diet to chugging detox teas.  My purpose has always been to cleanse my body of toxins and maximize my nutrition, especially in combination with exercise.

For this 3 week cleanse, I will continue my normal clean eating habits, but am just tweaking my morning routine!

2-4 cups warm water with 1/2 a lemon. THAT’s IT!

Some of the benefits of this simple morning ritual include:

-aids in digestion (i.e. bloating, heart burn, gas)

-strengthens your immune system and oral health

-vitamin C is a stress reducer and energy booster

-boosts your metabolism

-good for your liver, UTI prevention, your heart, and kidney stone prevention

-hydrates and reduces wrinkles and eye circles

The best part is that I don’t have to be so hard on myself with the foods I eat (though I always try to eat clean).  Hopefully after experimenting with this detox for the next three weeks, I will just add it into my daily routine!

Eating healthy is a lifestyle.  You can’t change it overnight! By gradually working into it with different clean-eating suggestions and guidelines, you can craft yourself the regimen that works best for you!  Not only do you save money and feel 50xbetter, but you prevent yourself from encountering health issues in the future, by nurturing your body with superfood nutrition.

Body & Mind Cleanse, Day #3 – Planning Ahead

cleanse, costfriendly, diy, healthyeating, healthyliving, ideas, onabudget, planningahead, prep, snacks

Rise and shine! Got an early start to the day since we had about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Flagstaff for the Snowbowl, my first time snowboarding a real mountain! Fueled up with my default egg and avocado breakfast and some quinoa.

I knew I had to pack a cooler of snacks since we were going to be up north for the day, and it’s not like I could just order anything off the menu.  With a ton of munchies on hand, I was grazing and energized for the whole day!

~~> What was in my cooler:

-Raisins

-Nut clusters (Costco)

-Bananas

-Clementines

-Easy avocado salad (avocado, tomato, lemon, salt, pepper, cilantro)

Homemade granola bars (no bake!)

-Naked drinks

-Coconut water

-Baby Carrots

Greek-style chic pea salad (minus the cheese… boo)

and plenty of water…  the only thing I wish I wasn’t missing out on was the hot chocolate. Once we arrived home after 5 hours of driving and 6 hours of snowboarding, I was hungry but too tired to cook. Luckily, I made a vegetable soup in bulk that I froze into single-portion containers! In the morning, I put one in the fridge to defrost so all I had to do was pop it in the microwave.  This concept also works well for frozen meals in general. It’s quick and convenient, it’s healthy, it’s exactly what you like, and it’s cost efficient!

Body & Mind Cleanse, Day #2 – How to deal with the munchies!

cleaneating, cleanse, detox, easycooking, healthyliving

The most challenging part of my cleanses isn’t planning my meals… it’s deciding what snacks to fill the gaps in between! I’ve always been a grazer when it comes to eating, several small portions spread throughout the day.  I like my savory and salty snacks, my crunchy munchies, and of course my sweets.  But what’s there to snack on besides raw foods when you’re on a cleanse? Once again, Pinterest has come to my rescue!

~~~>> Here are a few of my favorite homemade goodies:
Coconut Cream Larabars
Flourless Peanut Butter Muffins (can sub almond butter)
Honey Peanut Butter Protein Energy Balls
Peanut Butter Dip (can sub almond butter, great with fresh fruit!)
Oatmeal Banana Dark Chocolate Cookies
-Veggies & Hummus
-Cucumber salad (lemon juice, olive oil, salt, pepper, chili powder, maybe add onion and tomato!)
-Baked Garbanzo Beans (400degrees for 30min, shake halfway through… be creative and have fun with your spice cabinet! Honey Cinnamon, Ranch, Garlic & Onion…)
The list can go on! I hope this offers a solution to the crave factor.  I find that I not only eat these foods when on a detox, but they’re still yummy any day of the week.  You can make these satisfying substitutions and before your know it, you’re looking and feeling the benefits of healthy eating :]
Body & Mind Cleanse, Day #1… and welcome to my blog!
body, cleanse, healthyeating, mind, yoga
I’m a 24-year-old Chicago native, though I recently relocated to hot and sunny Arizona.  The warmer weather offers many outdoor activities any time of the year, even hot yoga in 120 degrees!  Every new week offers an opportunity to explore my new home, whether it’s swimming and tubing on the natural lazy river or hiking an unfamiliar mountain.  I now realize how much the temperamental winters of Chicago have limited my fitness goals!  Now that it’s beautiful everyday and I no longer have a gym membership, I’ve been doing most of my workouts at home, if not the great outdoors.  I’ve also been focusing on clean eating and a healthy mind.  Best of all, I do it all on a budget! Pinterest is my best friend :]
Speaking of Pinterest, that’s where I get many of my ideas, diet tips and fitness challenges! You can also follow me on my Pinterest.
I post my food and yoga pictures on my Instagram.
Yoga enthusiast. Health fiend. Practicing Buddhist.  My purpose is to humbly offer the life regimen that works for me :]
= Detox Day #1:
Morning vinyasa-flow yoga with a friend.
Then Breakfast…
Two eggs over-easy in coconut-oil complimented with fresh-sliced avocado tossed in lemon juice, salt, pepper, & fresh cilantro. Easy, filling, & delicious.
I also made my nutri-bullet shake:
-1c baby spinach
-handful mixed berries (frozen)
-unsweetened almond milk
-1tsp chia seed
Dinners will be tricky considering I work at an Italian-American restaurant.  Looks like my default dinner at work for the week is grilled chicken breast with sautéed veggies in olive oil.  Costs me $3 with my discount!  Eating earlier in the shift helps me cut back on all the munching and “taste-testing” I usually do.  I also pack my own healthy snacks so I won’t be temped to cheat.  Day one is always the hardest… especially when you work in the industry.
No alcohol. No sugar. No dairy. Nothing processed! Looks like I’ll be prepping and cooking a lot this week :]
