Terrariums: Making a Happy Space

Of course, this is about more than terrariums…

Ever look for a fresh start, or crave some boost of change in your lifestyle?  I always found myself wanting to improve a handful of aspects in my life, ways to be healthier and an effectively functional human being.  Yet often, these thoughts are buried by life’s daily distractions long enough to lose focus.

Trust me when I say it’s worth the time to STOP. Take a look around and ask yourself: What would I like less of, & What would I like more of.  Once you distinguish the things you love and things you don’t need, start cleaning! This applies to both your living space and the way you live.

Today and for days to come, I am focusing on my living space.  Home should be a sanctuary, a place where you can fully unwind in a space of love.  What might be cluttering (space and thought) that doesn’t need to be there? Does something really resonate with you?  If it does, keep it!wp-1462049412980.jpg

Plants and animals make my heart smile.  Probably the reason I have a zoo of fur babies.  As a reward of decluttering, I treated my happiness with crafts of succulent plants and fresh herbs.

I use the herbs for cooking, the plants are great for circulating oxygen in my home, and there’s life and smiles illuminating my space! My animals say hello to the plants every morning.  The kitties even have their own patch of wheatgrass growing in their kitty condo!  Thrilled to say this project has been a success…

For more thoughts on changing your living space for the better, I highly recommend The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.  She shares the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing.

You can learn how to build a terrarium or get plant inspiration on My Pinterest!  I do recommend you visit your local Goodwill to treasure hunt for pots and vases 🙂

Supplies:

⎔  Sand (any kind/color to help drain excess water)

⎔  Cactus Mix/Soil

⎔  Moss (prevents soil from mixing with sand/serves as decor)

⎔  Succulents

⎔  Vase/Jar/Terrarium

⎔  Rocks/River Stones/Trinkets (optional for decoration)

Building:

  1. After you clean whatever vase you are using to build your terrarium, fill the bottom with a layer of sand.
  2. You can put a layer of moss between your sand and soil to prevent them from mixing together over time.
  3. Add your cactus soil, enough to plant whatever succulents/cactuses you picked.

✩ tip: if you already own a thriving succulent, you can trim off a branch and replant it!

4.  Carefully plant your succulents, dampening the soil to set them in place.

5.  You can now add moss, stones, or other decoration ☺︎
